Landscaping Trends for 2020
Spring is not so far away. As the winter season changes, we often find that spring brings with it a need for improvement in our landscape. Following the harsh winter weather, there is the desire to restore vitality to our outdoor spaces.
Where to start with upgrading your landscape to one that will turn a head or two? The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) may be of help to you in that regard. NALP has recently forecast the landscaping trends that will be among the most popular in 2020.
Britt Wood, CEO of NALP, stated that “With a wave of design and technical innovations, our members report that ornate hardscaping, contemporary features, lush gardens, and smart irrigation are all trending and will influence landscape designs across the country in 2020. This year’s trends showcase how homeowners of all generations desire a striking, custom, and well-maintained outdoor space that benefits their community and the environment.”
The NALP’s hottest landscaping trends for 2020 are:
Ornate, geometric hardscaping. Intricate patterns for hardscaping—hard materials or structures built into a landscape—are trending. The NALP notes, “From walkways and patios to retaining walls and fire features, homeowners are looking to integrate popular home decor patterns into their hardscape designs.”
Contemporary and transitional designs. Contemporary, simple designs are very popular for outdoor spaces. Though plush with comfortable cushions and throw pillows, all great outdoor furniture is weather-friendly. “Multi-season functionality is essential as more homeowners are selecting elements that can survive a range of temperatures, such as native plants, heat lamps, and protective structures.” The NALP goes on to state that “interiorscaping” can create an outdoor garden oasis.
Bountiful Shades of Blue. Rich tones of blue (cobalt, moody, and naval) are dominating paint forecasters’ choices for 2020 color of the year. Blues are also heading outdoors to the gardens. Flowers such as blue fortune, delphinium, hydrangea, and grape hyacinth make for stunning displays.
Your Unique Garden Style. Floral gardens are just the beginning for showing off your personal taste in 2020. Edible gardens, planted throughout the landscape, add spectacular beauty and feed your family too!
Unique ways of displaying growing edibles throughout your landscape are ideal. Imagine walking along a pathway lined with bright, multi-colored containers — each one growing a different fruit or vegetable. Or edible art: a rustic, painted pallet hung upon a wall and holding recycled flower containers filled with herbs, spices, or flowers. Vertical gardening is perfect for smaller yards. Define your space to your own desires.
High-tech water solutions. One-click, remote irrigation systems are highly desirable to those who like to garden but value their time even more. The watering systems can be controlled when at home or away with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and smartphone apps.
Come spring, investing the time and effort in an upgrade to transform an ordinary yawn-of-a-yard into a thriving oasis is no small undertaking. But millions of ordinary people (DIY) are successful in doing just that. However, maintaining that oasis can be a very time consuming and never-ending responsibility. Most people simply do not have the time to care for a landscape at the level necessary to keep it lush, vibrant, and healthy.
At Wellman’s Lawn Care, caring for landscapes is what we do! So whatever choices you make to improve your landscape and its outdoor spaces, know that Wellman’s Lawn Care is ready to handle whatever maintenance you delegate to us.
